Burnley Area Self Help Agency (B.A.S.H.A.)

BASHA is a company limited by guarantee, founded to "Support and develop projects which advance the relief of poverty by the encouragement of thrift and the creation of mutual sources of credit for the residents of the Borough of Burnley"
Since its foundation BASHA has supported and developed the capacity of the credit union by successfully managing 2 ERDF Priority 4 projects and currently managing an SRB 6 project and an ERDF Priority 2 project.

SRB 6 Funding

In January 2002 BASHA received a grant from the SRB6 Funding, this has enabled them to employ 2 part time Project Development Workers and a part time Project Administrator to administer and run the project on behalf of the Credit Union.
Through having the grant funding BASHA has been able to help the credit union with its aims to tackle social and economic inclusion and capacity building. The credit union has been able to improve its marketing and promotion strategy, by having a large variety of general and specific information leaflets and posters designed and distributed across the borough, having their own website built and having more collection points open, including more recently, new town centre premises on Parker Lane. The credit union now offers money management and budgeting advice on personal and household accounting, as well as providing training opportunities to members, volunteers and staff. (to book an informal and confidential session or to receive more information, please contact the credit union).

The project funding has also allowed the credit union to develop the junior section of the membership by having weekly savings clubs in local schools and holding craft activity sessions and credit union awareness days at a variety of venues across Burnley, as well as producing regular newletters that include competitions and events.

Priority 2 Funding

Funding from the Priority 2 has enabled us to employ a part time Projects Manager and a full time Loans Development Worker. This new project will develop our loans service to our existing and potential members. We will be developing and introducing new products and systems to give a better and more accessible service in the coming months. e.g. longer opening hours, and easier access to home improvement loans, Green loans, home secrity loans and loans for residents entering self employment.
We will also be continuing our committment to developing the skills and abilities of our volunteers and staff.
